When water is spreading in Huntington Beach
Water moves fast through a slab home. In the first hour it finds baseboards and door frames, and in the first day it wicks into drywall and under flooring. If a supply line has failed, a water heater has split or a storm has pushed water through a door, the first call matters more than the first cleanup.
Our emergency water removal crews pull standing water with extraction units, and the water mitigation team follows with air movers and dehumidifiers so walls and floors are dried rather than just wiped. We name the equipment and the plan before any work starts.
If water is still spreading
Do these while you wait for the crew, and only the ones that are safe.
Stop the source
Close the shutoff valve at the fixture or the main valve at the house. If you cannot find it, say so on the call.
Power down wet zones
Turn off breakers for wet rooms only if you can reach the panel while standing on dry ground. Otherwise call the utility first.
Lift what you can
Raise furniture legs onto blocks, pull rugs and move electronics, papers and shoes off wet floors.
Keep people out
Keep children and pets away from standing water, especially if it came from a drain or toilet.
Standing water in your Huntington Beach home?
The 24/7 line is open now. Call (714) 515-1308 and say where the water is coming from.
A city built beside wetland and coast
Huntington Beach holds about 9.5 miles of beach, and a large marshy wetland lies between Downtown and Huntington Harbour. Much of it sits in the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, where a restoration was completed in 2006. The Talbert, Brookhurst and Magnolia Marshes south of Downtown finished their own restoration in 2010.
What does that mean for a homeowner? The city sits at about 39 feet above sea level, so water that reaches a street or yard has little slope to drain away on. We cannot tell you a flood zone from here, and we will not guess. Look up your address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, then ask your insurer whether your policy covers rising water, because standard homeowners policies usually exclude flood.
Where the water came from and what happens first
The source decides the safety steps and the drying plan. Here is how we sort a typical call.
| Water source | What it means | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Supply line or water heater | Clean water that turns into a bigger problem after about a day | Shut the valve, extract, start drying |
| Storm water through a door | Ground water carries soil and bacteria | Stay out of it, extract, disinfect, remove wet porous material |
| Toilet or drain backup | Sewage water, never a do-it-yourself job | Keep everyone away, call for containment and cleanup |
| Roof or window leak | Slow wetting of insulation and ceilings | Tarp or contain, then map moisture before closing anything up |
Sewage and storm water changes the scope, which is why our water damage cleanup work covers removal of contaminated material and sanitizing, not only drying.
From Main Street to the harbor: homes of every age
The Huntington Beach Pier dates to 1904 and the Newland House, now a museum, was built in 1898. Central Park opened in 1974 and is nearly 350 acres, the largest city-owned park in Orange County. Those dates tell you something practical: housing here spans well over a century, so plumbing, roofing and wall materials differ block by block.
Ask us what your house is made of when you call. A newer tract home near Central Park and an older home close to Main Street dry differently, and the equipment list changes with them. Harbor-front properties around Huntington Harbour sit beside water all year, so ask whether any lower-level space stays damp after a leak and mention it to the crew.
Permits, the water supply and who to call
Huntington Beach Building & Inspections at 2000 Main Street says building permits are required to repair a building or structure, with some work exempt. The office takes permit questions at the counter, and the city's online HB ACA portal handles applications and inspection scheduling. If your rebuild goes beyond drying, call before the drywall goes back up.
The city's drinking water comes from the Metropolitan Water District through the Municipal Water District of Orange County, plus nine city wells that draw on an aquifer managed by the Orange County Water District. If a water main or meter line is the problem, that is the city's water side of the call and ours starts at your property line. We also cover the Seal Beach side to the northwest, ZIP 90740, which sits just past the Huntington Beach line.
What to photograph before we start
Check your policy and ask your insurer what it needs. These notes help whichever way the claim goes.
Documentation for your insurer
- The source of the water, such as the split hose or failed valve
- Every wet room from two angles, with a wide shot and a close shot
- Wet belongings before you move them
- Any moisture readings the crew takes, with the date
- Receipts for emergency steps you take on your own
Nearby towns we dispatch to
If the loss crosses a city line, we also work in Westminster to the north and in Costa Mesa to the east. Flood and storm losses that reach structure are handled through flood damage restoration.
